This book explores the implications of Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of cultural production for the study of translation as a socio-cultural activity. Bourdieu’s work has continued to inspire research on translation in the last few years, though without a detailed, large-scale investigation that tests the viability of his conceptual tools and methodological assumptions. With focus on the Arabic translations of Shakespeare’s tragedies in Egypt, this book offers a detailed analysis of the theory of ‘fields of cultural production’ with the purpose of providing a fresh perspective on the genesis and development of drama translation in Arabic.

The different cases of the Arabic translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear and Othello lend themselves to sociological analysis, due to the complex socio-cultural dynamics that conditioned the translation decisions made by translators, theatre directors, actors/actresses and publishers. In challenging the mainstream history of Shakespeare translation into Arabic, which is mainly premised on the linguistic proximity between source and target texts, this book attempts a ‘social history’ of the ‘Arabic Shakespeare’ which takes as its foundational assumption the fact that translation is a socially-situated phenomenon that is only fully appreciated in its socio-cultural milieu. Through a detailed discussion of the production, dissemination and consumption of the Arabic translations of Shakespeare’s tragedies, Bourdieu in Translation Studies marks a significant contribution to both sociology of translation and the cultural history of modern Egypt.

Our aim is to provide translators, scholars, and readers with a forum in which to cultivate a dialogue about the importance of translation in a globalized world, to illuminate the challenges and difficulties involved in transplanting a text from a foreign language and culture into English, and to increase the visibility and status of the translator in our contemporary world. As such, Translation Review serves as a major critical and scholarly journal that facilitates cross-cultural communication through the refined art and craft of literary translation. In 2013, TR received the Phoenix Award from The Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ) for significant editorial achievement.

Translation Review is a peer-reviewed journal published by the University of Texas at Dallas and distributed internationally by Routledge, Taylor and Francis Group. The journal is read worldwide and has both national and international institutional subscribers. TR is published three times a year and accepts submissions on a rolling basis.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong

The Department of Translation at the Chinese University of Hong Kong is now hiring a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow, initially tenurable for 12 months, with the possibility of further extension for an additional 12 months. As the first Department of Translation in Hong Kong, our programme has a long history of excellence in a variety of fields, including but not limited to translation history, translation and technology, translation theory, and practical translation (especially literary). The Department is also home to the Centre for Translation Technology, which has specialized projects undertaken by Centre members. . Faculty members are active in securing research grants and currently GRF projects on translation history and translation theory, as well as other specialized projects, are conducted. Individuals with expertise in the relevant disciplines are encouraged to consult details on our website relating to ongoing projects and expertise of staff members before applying. Applicants should have (i) a relevant PhD degree; (ii) strong commitment to excellence in research and teaching; and (iii) outstanding accomplishments and research potential.

The second Translation Studies Summer School organised by SoFT will be held at the Castello dei Conti Guidi in the historical village of Poppi in Tuscany (Italy) from July 24th to July 30th 2016. This intensive course is designed to reflect on the history, the theories, the methodologies and the issues in literary and pragmatic translation. It is a crash course in the still burgeoning field of studies in translation for students, translators and researchers, which consists of lectures followed by practical workshops. Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the course. A variety of cultural activities are included in the programme. Participants will find a whole range of options on site for accommodation and meals at reasonable prices. (Refer to the registration and accommodation forms.)

Intended audience: students studying for a doctorate, a master’s degree or a degree in translation studies; professional translators; researchers in the field of translation studies.
Registration fees (including morning and afternoon sessions, and cultural events): 350 euros. Languages: mastery of French and English is essential in order to follow the programme. The presentations will be in French (with a summary in English) or in English.

Documents: a general document related to the sessions will be sent to the participants in May 2016. It will include:
--For the morning session: an introduction to the lecturer, a general description of the presentation, a list of the objectives to be reached and a short bibliography,
--For the afternoon session: a description of the workshop, a list (if required) of the texts that will be studied and any other essential document for the analysis of these texts.
