A person who lives near a story may be the first to see it and tell others. In my assignment I considered how citizen journalism can bring local concerns into public view, especially when a large newsroom cannot be present. A phone helps a witness share a recording, but the value of that recording depends on context and careful verification.

A witness can change what people know

Darnella Frazier recorded the murder of George Floyd in 2020. Her video became an important public record, and the Pulitzer Prizes gave her a special citation in 2021 for the courage of recording it. The example shows the force of a firsthand account. It should not be turned into a rule that every person in danger must film rather than seek safety or help.

Local information still needs checking

Community updates during a disaster can help people understand urgent needs. Yet an old picture, a mistaken location or an unconfirmed claim can spread quickly as well. Before forwarding an update, look for its original source and date, confirm with people or services close to the event when possible, and consider whether naming someone could harm them. If you cannot verify a claim, say so rather than presenting it as fact.
