AIDA and Language-Course Outreach: A Student's 2018 Proposal

Hits: 4

By Swastika Saha

This article is edited from a Modlingua internship assignment submitted in July 2018. It presents the author's proposal from that period, not an announcement of courses available today. The AIDA terminology has been clarified, and unsupported claims about cost, employment and search rankings have been removed.

How can professional language courses reach students who have not yet considered the range of work connected with languages? In my assignment, I used the AIDA model to think about that question and proposed school and university outreach as one possible approach for Modlingua.

Planning before promotion

I began with the view that a business needs to understand its market and learn from earlier work. A plan helps connect a proposed activity with the people it is meant to serve, rather than treating promotion as a series of unrelated posts.

For language training, I thought the starting point was explaining why students might want to learn professional skills alongside a language. The message would need to connect with their questions about work, while avoiding promises that a course alone would make them employable.

Using AIDA to organize the message

AIDA stands for attention, interest, desire and action. Smart Insights' discussion of direct-marketing fundamentals uses this sequence to explain how a message can develop toward a response. My original assignment used awareness for the first stage; attention is the wording used here.

I treated the model as a way to order communication, rather than a guarantee that everyone would move through the stages or enroll. A course message first needs to be noticed. It then needs to give a reader a reason to pay attention to the learning opportunity, understand its relevance and consider a next step.

A proposal for schools and universities

My suggestion in 2018 was to introduce professional language-learning opportunities through seminars and lectures in schools and universities. I thought this could bring the discussion to students where they were already learning, instead of relying only on them finding a course online.

In terms of AIDA, a seminar could draw attention to work in the language field. Discussion of that work could build interest. Students could then consider whether the learning matched their own aims before deciding whether to seek more information.

This was a proposed outreach route. My assignment did not provide a budget, evidence of an agreement with an institution or results from such a campaign. It should not be read as proof that the approach would be inexpensive, produce a trained workforce or succeed in every setting.

Online communication as support

I also reflected on the way websites, video calls and social media could connect learners and teachers across distances. In my view, these channels could support discussion beyond a classroom or a single event.

The useful point was the connection between the message and the learner. A channel gives a course provider a way to communicate; it does not make the teaching suitable or accessible to everyone by itself. Clear information about what is being offered remains important.

What the proposal taught me

The assignment helped me link a marketing model with a specific idea rather than leave it as a set of initials. My proposal brought together student awareness, discussion of professional learning and an opportunity to ask questions.

I also suggested that outreach could improve Modlingua's visibility. That was an aim, not evidence of higher search rankings or guaranteed growth. The main lesson was to plan a message around the people it is intended to reach and to distinguish a promising idea from a result that has actually been measured.
