Content Writing, Online Marketing and Translation: A Jewellery-Shop Example

Hits: 2

By Smita Shenoy

This edited internship essay explores the relationship between content writing, online marketing and translation through a fictional jewellery-store example. It is an argument about communication, not a report of actual sales results.

The author acknowledges Devanshu Bhatt's Modlingua article, Relationship between Content Writing, Online Marketing and Translation in Multiple Languages, for helping her understand how these activities connect.

A customer who cannot read the shop window

Imagine a Dubai-based American customer who wants to buy traditional South Indian jewellery for his wife. Friends recommend a small, authentic jewellery shop in Kerala. He visits its website and finds beautiful photographs, with detailed descriptions beside each ornament. There is just one problem: the descriptions are in Malayalam.

He asks a Malayalam-speaking friend for help. The friend translates the words, but is neither a professional translator nor a content writer. The customer can now understand something of the products, yet the descriptions no longer have the effect the shop intended. The photographs have attracted him, but the writing has not helped him make an informed choice.

The example brings together three activities that businesses sometimes treat as separate: writing useful content, helping people find it online, and making it understandable in another language.

Good products still need clear explanations

A quality product is only part of the journey from manufacture to sale. Marketing helps introduce it to the people who may want it. Online marketing uses internet channels to connect a business with those people, while the website gives them somewhere to learn more.

Design and presentation matter, but an attractive layout cannot replace useful information. A product description should tell readers what they need to know in clear, appropriate language. Good content is not needless boasting or hype. It is solid writing about the product and the questions a customer is likely to ask.

Content writing gives the message substance

Competent writers help a business explain its offer and develop a recognisable voice. They choose the details that matter, organise them well and avoid leaving the reader to guess. In our jewellery-shop example, the photographs may create interest, but the words must carry information that the images alone cannot convey.

Content and online marketing therefore depend on each other. Marketing may bring someone to a page; the content must make that visit worthwhile. Visibility without understanding is a missed opportunity.

Translation connects the message with another audience

If the shop wants to reach customers who do not read Malayalam, it needs more than a literal replacement of words. A translator must understand the product, the intended reader and the effect of the description. The result should make sense as a product description in the reader's language, rather than sound like a puzzle assembled from another one.

Choosing a translation method only to save money can overlook the cost of a confusing message. Automated output, where used, still needs attention to meaning, context and suitability for the audience. The important question is whether the published wording helps the customer understand the product accurately.

Writers and translators may consult online resources to understand concepts or find the right expression. The value of their work lies in judging what fits, checking meaning and making the final text useful to its readers.

A shared task, not three isolated services

Return to our fictional shop. A bilingual website with well-written descriptions would allow the customer to explore the jewellery without depending on an informal explanation from a friend. That does not guarantee a sale, but it removes a barrier to understanding.

Content writing gives the message substance. Online marketing helps it reach an audience. Translation makes that message accessible across languages. When the three are planned together, the customer has a better chance of finding the information and understanding it.

All is well that is translated well, provided there is something worth saying in the first place.
