When I first worked on a research project in 1985, finding 150 references took me eight months. About twenty years later, I gathered many more references for a doctoral project in a shorter period. The subjects and methods were not identical, so these numbers are not a controlled comparison. They do explain why research networks and easier access to other people's work changed how I approached a literature search.

Finding people as well as papers

A search result can lead to a paper, but it cannot always answer a practical question about a method or an instrument. Research communities online let me discover what other people were studying and ask whether their work might help mine. The value of a network is not its size alone. It is the chance to ask a clear question of someone with relevant experience and to offer useful knowledge in return.

Professional groups can also show which skills appear in job notices, how a field describes its problems and whom to contact about a project. Those are leads, not a promise of a job or a shortcut past checking a source. I would still read the original paper, confirm an opportunity with the institution and ask permission before using anyone else's work or equipment.

Using the network with care

The same connections can help a small business speak to customers or help neighbours share information in an emergency. But a forwarded post may be out of date. Before passing on a request for help, it is worth checking its date, source and current need. Before sharing a research claim, look for the underlying paper rather than trusting a summary.

Respect matters as much as reach. People in a group bring different backgrounds and opinions. A specific request, a thoughtful reply and clear credit do more for a lasting professional relationship than posting everywhere or treating contacts as a list to exploit.
