When a story unfolds nearby, ordinary people can record and share what they see. Citizen journalism gives them a way to add firsthand accounts to the public conversation rather than waiting for a news organisation to arrive.
Rethinking who a journalist is
Citizen journalism asks who gets to tell a story. A friend, colleague or neighbour with a phone can report an event in real time. Their perspective may fill a gap in conventional coverage, but it should be checked just as carefully.
What it makes possible
- Direct accounts. Social platforms, blogs and videos let witnesses share information without waiting for publication by a newsroom.
- Live coverage. Features like live streaming let anyone broadcast an event with one tap.
- New voices. People with little access to traditional outlets can bring local issues to a wider audience.
- Collaboration. Citizen journalists often work together to gather better, more useful information.
These tools can help witnesses share what they see and bring neglected stories to wider attention. That does not make every post reliable: the claim and its context still need checking.
With great power comes great responsibility
The same tools can also spread hate and misinformation. Before posting, a responsible contributor should:
- Never post just to gain likes or followers.
- Never use fake thumbnails or false details to make a video go viral.
- Check and recheck every piece of information, and use credible sources.
- Avoid posting anything fake, hateful or hurtful.
Citizen journalism is a powerful expression of free speech, and what we post can have real consequences. Used carefully, it serves the truth. When stories cross borders, accurate translation helps them keep their meaning.
