With the access to Internet on one click and desire to provide everyone with truthful and deep information have generated a new term citizen journalism. Different from professional journalism, people performing this need not require a professional degree. This is carried out by motivation.
Citizen journalism can be defined as spreading of news through blogs, social media sites and websites. Citizen journalists at any part of world when they find something useful and worth sharing they put it on internet and other people keep on spreading it. The information can be generated in any language. This links to another aspect. When citizen journalists generate reports in local languages, they give a global platform to their language and culture. Its gains some important and is reviewed by language enthusiasts. Multi linguists gets a major role to play. Suppose a multilinguist know 3 languages and they create reports in all three language, it will have a larger collection of readers than a report in only one language. It will spread widely and they will diffuse more knowledge and culture.
This citizen journalism concept has gained much popularity today. It is practical that professional journalists cannot be present everywhere at the particular needed time or they don’t get easy access to local people’s life. In there absence citizen journalists play a crucial role. They know their surroundings and the society well. They use their language skills to communicate and share society’s thoughts. Hence what they generate is more appropriate and understood.
In todays time, big media houses and reporters are more interested in making money and competition. Focus is on creating such reports and news that gain more TRPs, collect more money for them and make them the top leader. For these goals, they sometimes keep aside moral and ethical values instead show what is more scandalous in a language widely recognized. On the other side, citizen journalists make reports based on the facts, truth and which are helpful for the society. They are not concerned about the money or TRP. They just want the betterment of society and truth to reach out to everyone. And if they do it in a language widely understood by local people, it can create a large impact on society.
To create harmony in society, multi linguist and citizen journalists can play a crucial role. They can give a language a social platform and their efforts can make the society a better place to live.
I am thankful to Modlingua to provide me an opportunity to present my views on this topic and making me realize how we can help society in its betterment.
