Google has become a renowned brand that uses its powerful search engine to accumulate all the data needed for a person in order to answer his or her enquiries. In general, a search engine is a type of software system that allows its users to search for relevant information by entering keywords. Many people use Google search engine instead of other search engine such as Bing, Yahoo, Ask.com, and others because of its simplicity and efficient return results.
Google search engine also uses its own algorithm to show a ranking in its results page. With this, its users will be able to find their answers immediately. Many users only use the first page because it shows the most relevant results. Google search engine has also change its results in a way that instead of giving several links to choose from, you are able to see a direct result. For example, if you want to convert Malaysian Ringgit to Australian Dollar, you will see the results on the top without clicking on any link. This innovative change has led to a better experience in using the Google search engine.
Both Google search engine and its ranking system work together to give more visibility to products or services or in other words, these two give a great business exposure. In order to stay relevant, a website then has to be user-friendly and be high in quality. A poor quality website is rarely shown in the results page. It is important for a product or service to be shown in the first page of the Google search results.
Both translators and multilingual writers are able to benefits from this phenomenon when they want to provide services. For example, Modlingua.com, as a website that provides translation services, it could benefit tremendously from the Google search and its top ranking. The visibility that the website achieves from Google search results helps it to gain more credibility to ensure their services remain relevant.
As a user of two languages, Malay and English, I am able to reach to a more specific audience as most people are comfortable in using their first language. According to WorldBank, Malaysia have about 30 million people in 2015. There are also other countries that use a similar language to Malay for example, Brunei, Singapore and Indonesia. If they choose to search information on Google search engine using their native language, Malay or something similar, the content written in Malay will receive more exposure. The first page of the Google search results will show contents that are written in Malay. Therefore, if I write using Malay language, I can reach out to the Malay speaking audience.
Apart from that, I could write English content but remain relevant to any Malay speaker. The number of speakers using Malay as a second language is also increasing. Thus, I need to keep writing more content both in Malay and English to accommodate this audience. In addition to that, a multilingual writer has to ensure his or her content are of high quality and relevance in order to satisfy the consumers and in return reach the goal to be in the main page of Google search results. Hence, the ranking is important to warrant the work of translators and multilingual writers stays in the first page of Google search results to receive greater exposure.
