The 3rd International Conference on Translation, Technology and Globalization in Multilingual Context, June 23-26,2012, New Delhi, Jointly organized by Indian Translators Association and linguainda in close cooperation with Punjab Technical University and Instituto Cervantes was successfully concluded on June 26, 2012 creating a new benchmark for translators and interpreters community of India.
The inaugural session of the conference that formed part of the Spanish Day celebrations organized by Instituto Cervantes, the official cultural center of Embassy of Spain in India witnessed presence of four vice chancellors at a common platform on June 23, 2012. In presence of more than 200 language professionals, academicians and translators from across the globe, His Excellency, the ambassador of Colombia, Mr. Juan Alfredo Pinto Saavedra as Guest of Honour inaugurated the conference along with the host Dr. Oscar Pujol, Director of Instituto Cervantes; Dr. Prabhjot Kaur, representative of Vice Chancellor Dr Rajneesh Arora, Punjab Technical University; Dr. Braj Kishore Kuthiala, Vice Chancellor, Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication; Dr. Jancy James, Vice Chancellor, Central University of Kerala; Shri Atul Kohari, National Secretary, Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas; Shri Ravi Kumar, Founder President, Indian Translators Association.
It was also a moment of pride for the Indian Translators Association as the book “Role of Translation in Nation Building” edited by Mr. Ravi Kumar was released by Dr. Oscar Pujol. The book received high praise for its thought provoking content and it may be used as text book for translation studies in India.During the inauguration of the conference while all the dignitaries stressed upon the importance of translation in the social and economic growth of the nation, Dr. Prabhjot Kaur of Punjab Technical took the opportunity to formally announce launch of B.Sc and Post Graduate Diploma in Technical Translation and Interpretation at Mohali Campus of Punjab Technical University.
On this occasion the keynote speakers Dr. Moses Nyongwa, Canada, Shri Purnendra Kishore, India and Dr. Maneerat Sawasdiwat, Thailand enlightened the gathering on Translation Industry of Canada, Translation - a key enabler for making India a Skills Superpower by 2022 and formation of Asian Association of Translation Industry respectively.
For the successive 04 days from June 23 till June 26, 2012 more 100 experts presented their papers and shared their views on various themes including Globalization, internationalization, localization and translation (GILT); Government policies towards translation and languages Channels of communication and the mass media; Teaching and training in translation and interpreting; Theoretical approaches to translation; Pedagogic challenges in translation; Translation of specialized text (scientific, technical, medical etc.); Quality Standards in Translation; Terminology management and project management in translation; The publishing industry and translation; Machine and memory tools in translation; Technology and innovation in translation etc.
On the closing day of the conference, a dedicated workshop on Project Management and Technology Integration in Translation was organized by Mr. Ravi Kumar, the Conference Convener & President of Indian Translators Association. The workshop witnessed presence of more than 150 translators and academicians who learnt the basics of project management, quality control and technological integration in translation services and attainment of customer satisfaction.
All the participating members of the conference reached a consensus that there is an urgent need to take steps to accord professional status to translators and formulate course modules in translation studies that may fill the gap between the academia and the industry.
