Project management is what turns a translation assignment into a successful delivery. In this Modlingua webinar, we look at the most common project management mistakes translators and language professionals make - unclear scope, unrealistic schedules, weak client communication, skipped quality checks and poor documentation - and how to avoid them on every project.

Translation is one of the fastest-growing industries in India. With around 493 million internet users looking for content in their own languages, more companies are hiring language professionals to manage their translation needs. Yet project management remains an underrated and often overlooked part of the translation and localization process. A good project manager organizes the plan, maintains resources and delivers the project to the client within the agreed timeframe.

The mistakes discussed in this video are easy to make and costly to fix. Defining the scope wrongly at the start of a project leads to disputes over cost, time and quality later. Ignoring the schedule breaks client trust, because corporate etiquette demands delivery within the given timeline. Not discussing the budget openly makes clients feel the team works like robots. Skipping quality analysis and documentation means the same errors repeat from project to project - experience only counts when it is recorded. And poor communication with the client during execution creates problems that surface only at delivery.

Beyond process, a project manager's behavior decides how the team performs. The best project managers are approachable, honest and energetic, solve problems instead of assigning blame, and motivate the team when it matters. Interpersonal skills are as important as planning skills.

According to the Project Management Institute: "Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, and techniques to execute projects effectively and efficiently. It's a strategic competency for organizations, enabling them to tie project results to business goals - and thus, better compete in their markets." PMI's Job Growth and Talent Gap report (2017-2027) projects that India will need 70 lakh new project managers in ten years, making it the fastest-growing country in the world for project management-oriented employment. For translators who can manage projects, the opportunity is large.
