Written in June 2018 during the author's Modlingua internship, when she tested Grammarly on her own application text.

Tools such as Grammarly are of great significance while working on a project that involves translation or content writing. They not only help improve the quality of the content but also reduce the time taken to carry out the editing work.

I came to know about this writing-enhancement tool called Grammarly through Modlingua. It checks text against more than 250 grammar rules and even suggests style improvements and vocabulary enhancements. For people engaged in translation or content writing it can be of enormous value, because it automatically detects potential grammar, spelling, punctuation, word choice and style mistakes. Even I have started using it.

To explain how this tool is useful, I took a text I had written about myself as an example:

"Hello, i'm Ruchika Gulati, currently pursuing B.A (hons.) German from Department of Germanic and Romance studies, University of Delhi and will be graduating this summer. These past three years have not only helped me to develop interest for German language but also enriched my knowledge in history of Germany and german language as well as introduced me to the world of translation and interpretation.

As a part of this course, i have done a few translations on Rental agreements, Recipes, Weather reports, Indo-german relations etc which helped me realize where my interest lay. Therefore i decided to pursue a career in the field of translation and interpretation. After my graduation i'll be doing my masters in German translation and interpretation from Jawaharlal Nehru University (already cleared the entrance for the same).

To complement my undergraduate studies, i am also a student at Max Mueller Bhawan and doing my B2.2 level from there. I have also done internship in the field of marketing and now looking forward to be a part of Modlingua."

There are a number of mistakes in this text, mostly punctuation and capitalization errors. Such problems are common and usually come from lack of knowledge or lack of time. In formal communication, such as applying for a job or delivering a project to a client, these mistakes can leave a bad impression on the client or the company.

So, to check the mistakes I had made, I ran the text through Grammarly. It identified all of them, highlighting each mistake on the left-hand side with its correction on the right-hand side, and categorized them into spelling, grammar, punctuation and so on. It even offered an option for human proofreading, where professional proofreaders check the text and correct any errors. In addition, the tool rated the vocabulary and readability of my text and reported the number of words and characters.

The corrected text reads as follows:

In my view, Grammarly is a very beneficial tool. It improves the quality of my content by making it more presentable, catching the punctuation and capitalization errors I generally make, and it saves time: once all the errors are identified, it takes only a couple of minutes to correct them, with the corrections provided alongside the highlighted mistakes.
