By Sachin Kumar
This report was written in August 2018 at the end of the author's Modlingua summer internship.
The summer internship 2018 by Modlingua started on 1st June officially. It was a 3-month internship program started by Mr. Ravi Kumar, the M.D. of Modlingua. It is a huge platform which is active on a world level and provides the internship opportunity for people worldwide. This internship gives us a platform where we get to work with people from different backgrounds, different places, different countries, and thus we get the opportunity to interact with many people and work as a team. Modlingua teaches us how to work professionally in this competitive market.
Getting started: the profile
The first step of our learning was "How to make the profile". Firstly we were told to write about ourselves in MS Word, and along with that, we were told to put a 250x250 pixel picture of ourselves. The description included our own description, a short description of our family, our native place, our qualifications, our hobbies, our interests, our career goals. This was supposed to be 500-800 words.
The eight assignments
The first assignment was "Analysis of errors and omissions in content writing". This assignment consisted of proofreading. It also included how to check grammatical mistakes and errors, and it taught how and where to put commas, along with verbs and other grammatical aspects.
The second assignment was "Quality control in content writing and translation". In this assignment, the Modlingua Rubric and Grammarly were introduced. Both were of great help in quality control. We were supposed to copy-paste our content into Grammarly and then activate it. Then, one by one, Grammarly used to show the mistakes, whether a grammatical mistake or any other type of error. The second assignment also taught us about the quality standards in translation. The most important thing that we got to know in the second assignment was how to collaborate through the social media platform.
The third assignment was "Transcription". From the videos given to us on the Modlingua channel, we were supposed to choose one and take approval in a doc sheet from Mr. Ravi Kumar. After receiving the approval, we were supposed to do the transcription of the chosen video. In transcription, we were required to transcribe the video one to one, in the same manner as spoken in the video, in the language chosen by us. The transcription was first written in Word, and then we were supposed to go to the Modlingua website and submit the assignment.
The fourth assignment was "Subtitle". In this assignment, we were supposed to put the subtitles on the video that we had earlier transcribed. For this, we were first required to watch the video whose link was given in the assignment. Then we were supposed to take approval from Mr. Ravi Kumar, and after that we received a link for adding the subtitles, which opened the YouTube subtitle-editing portal. We were supposed to listen to the video carefully and add the subtitles carefully, and save them after editing. Then Mr. Ravi Kumar approved the subtitles and they became live on the YouTube video.
The fifth assignment was "Social Media Marketing". In this assignment, we were given four options to choose from, along with various information and videos to view, and guest lectures to increase our knowledge. The first option was: why Google search, and why is top ranking in Google search important? The second option was: could you explain the relationship between content writing, online marketing, and translation in multiple languages? The third option was to differentiate between globalization, localization, internationalization, and translation of content. The fourth and last option was to prepare a business plan for promoting the short-term professional courses offered by Modlingua.
The sixth assignment was "Scriptwriting", to be done in Tahoma font. Before starting, we were supposed to take approval by filling a form whose link was given to us. Firstly we were given a list of the names of world-famous translators. Then we were supposed to google about them and take approval from Mr. Ravi Kumar, and then watch the videos given to us, and based on the instructions in those videos we were supposed to write the script.
The seventh assignment was "Business personality". In this assignment, we were given two videos to watch first, containing instructions to help us complete it. Firstly we were supposed to take approval from Mr. Ravi Kumar regarding the name of the personality we had selected as an inspiration. After this, we were supposed to prepare the video script on that person's life, working, and achievements, written in Tahoma font.
The eighth and last assignment is the "Final Project Report", supposed to be 1,500-2,000 words. It is a kind of project report on the activities that we did during the internship at Modlingua. The points we are supposed to include are: the assignments we did, the volunteering options we opted for, how it helped us, the advantages and disadvantages of an online internship, our experience at Modlingua, and if we have any business plan or collaboration offer we have to brief about it. And then, after completing it, we have to submit it.
What I learned
All these assignments were of great help to us. We learned various things, such as how to make one's profile in limited words with a powerful impact. I also learned how to do proofreading in content writing and transcription. The assignments also taught the subtitling of a video, brand making for a translator, and script writing - all those things that a translator should know in today's competitive world. All this knowledge is important for the growth of a translator.
Advantages of an online internship
The most important advantage of the online internship is that we can work from anywhere, whether it is our home, a park, or while traveling. This saves a lot of time traveling to an office for an offline internship. We can work according to our comfort, and a big online internship platform such as Modlingua gives us enough flexibility to complete our work with full efficiency. The main advantage is that it connects us on a world-level platform with various people from different countries at the same time and helps us learn a lot. We can see the notice board anytime. It also prepares us for the upcoming online markets, so that in the coming future we are fully prepared to deal with the competitive online world.
Disadvantages of the online world
As such, there are no serious disadvantages of the online internship. The simple disadvantages can be lack of connectivity, lack of availability of internet access, and lack of electronic gadgets.
My experience at Modlingua
Modlingua is a big platform for all learners. The guest lectures which it provides are very helpful and effective, and the lecturers were very experienced and educated. I never imagined that I'd get to learn this much in this short period. In short, it taught many things in a short time. There are a lot of videos on the Modlingua YouTube channel, and each and every video is of great help. All these videos were on different topics and consisted of instructions and suggestions which helped me a lot during my internship. There are a lot of articles and blogs on the Modlingua website and also a lot of reading resources written by professionals. We can read these at any time and can gain help in completing our assignments, along with increasing our own knowledge.
Conclusion
Therefore, I would like to thank Mr. Ravi Kumar sir for providing me with this great opportunity of becoming an intern at Modlingua. I learned a lot from this internship, and all these learnings will be of great use in my whole life. One cannot find any other internship platform which provides this much knowledge in the short period of 3 months. I will be thankful to Modlingua always. Thank you, sir.
