Ants are a familiar example of teamwork. Each ant is small, but a colony can build, forage and solve problems on a large scale. Research on ant colonies has even compared their communication to computer networks. For translators, who often work alone at a desk, the colony offers a useful reminder: good work usually depends on a team and a network.

Communication keeps the team together

Ants share information through chemical signals that other ants can detect. When one is separated from the group, it can find its way back. That constant flow of information is what lets the colony work in an organised way. Translation teams need the same thing: clear briefs, shared glossaries, style notes and quick answers to questions, so that everyone works from the same information.

Quality comes from stages, not one person

A single ant achieves little on its own; the colony achieves a great deal. In translation, the same idea applies to quality. A text should move through clear stages: the translator produces the first version, a proofreader or reviser checks it, corrections are made, and only then does it go to the client.
