You are the ultimate warrior of the human race, leading human exploration. On Earth you have secured world peace and are revered like a demi-god. Now you are heading towards a newly discovered Planet X that boasts intelligent life. As your spacecraft lands, a crowd of inhabitants who look like little blue babies gathers around. The town head steps forward as you open the door, raise your hand, and say "Hello". SLOP! A ray of blue light hits you, and all that is left of you is a pair of eyes drifting in a pool of slime. Your crew quickly scoops you up and escapes. You spend the rest of your life in a jar in a space research lab, only to learn years later that in Planet X's language, "hello" sounds like "I will destroy you". Maybe that is why they have translator devices in all the sci-fi flicks.
On a serious note, translation is one of the most critical jobs in modern society. As the globe comes together through information sharing and advances in communication, the demand for carrying ideas from one language to another keeps growing. Translation plays a vital role for international companies and governments alike. History holds examples of wars sparked by misinterpretation and business relationships severed by failed communication.
