GILT: Globalization, Internationalization, Localization and Translation

Starting backwards from the abbreviation G.I.L.T. and with the most integral part of globalization, Translation is defined as translating written content from one language into another. Technically defined, it is communication of meaning from the source language to the target language. In the process of globalization, translation comes under the concept of Localization, which doesn't just consist of translation, adaptation of content to the target language but also adaptation of the product to the culture and style of the target language and the locale. The fast food restaurant chain McDonald’s introduction of burgers relevant to the indian taste is a great example of localization of their hamburgers. But what makes localization easier, cost effective, higher in quality and faster is Internationalization. It is the process of planning which makes the products language independent. While it enables localization to function effectively, it also leads to effective functioning of translation. 

The Localization Industry Standards Association (LISA) defines Globalization as a cycle than a single process. Globalization is the free transfer of goods, capital, services, people, technology and information. The concepts internationalization and localization are part of the cycle of globalization and play an important role for translators by minimising the workload and leaving the translator only the essential part she needs to translate and localize. 

Globalization is often linked to businesses but in context to the translation industry, it has to do more with language and culture. With the increase in globalization, there is an increased demand for marketing and advertising in different countries and different languages. With exchange of information across the globe, there is a high demand for translation in every field such as Legal Translation, Medical Translation, Specialised business translation.


The knowledge of these concepts makes a translator aware of her role in this huge process of globalization. It gives her knowledge and opportunities to explore career as a language professional. Personally, I believe that the clarity of these concepts will train the translators to recognise the essence of their position and profession. With the help of Social Media Marketing, translators and language professionals can be an active part of globalization. The core crux of globalization lies in translation. With more experience and a step into the globalised world, exchange of ideas and culture will further increase their knowledge of localization, leading to quality and cost-effective translation and transcreation. Globalization and communication go hand in hand. Translation is thus an essential part of the whole process involving Localization and Internationalization.
