Brief Profile

 

I am Ishika Roy from Kolkata. Growing up, I had always been fascinated by stories of life, of people. For which I had stuck to humanities in my +2. Then did my English Honours from Bhawanipur Education Society College affiliated with the University of Calcutta. I have finished my M.A with 1st class in Comparative Indian Language and Literature from the University of Calcutta in 2019. From 2019-2020 I had gone to Pune after getting selected for a language diploma programme by CIIL and learnt Marathi. It is my love for the English language that I am currently pursuing my second M.A degree in English from IGNOU. Also for a brief period, I got to know about the Spanish language. Last year when the pandemic hit, I was pretty clueless just like anybody else and worked remotely as a teacher for 5 months and after which I worked as a freelancer with Testbook as a part of their Bengali translation team. I have always harboured a knack to learn new stuff. And language just fascinates me somehow. While in school and college I had taken part in some plays and made sure that I won in inter-school competitions whenever I participated. 

 

Career goals

 

I aspire to be a teacher and a translator for Marathi-Bengali, Hindi-English-Bengali domain. I believe translation is what we do every time words hit our ears. We all have a unique language in which we translate even when we hear our mother tongue. We always translate into our language of comprehension. I am fascinated by how translation works. How did I know that I love translation? When I used to listen to songs and try to remember the lyrics I’d first translate the meaning in my language then try singing it. The job became easier. Then in my university, some of us were asked to translate few portions of a Bengali text into English. After finishing the job I was very excited and anxious. And finally, when I learnt Marathi there as a part of our course I had to translate fifteen pages of a Marathi play in Bengali. I realised I can’t give up on translation rather I have to learn more about it.  I want to open a world to myself and others by learning the very core of translation and manoeuvring it. Hence I am excited about this summer internship and discover new avenues for myself in the world of translation.
