Citizen journalism is an act of reporting news by the general public. A citizen journalist need not be a professional journalist or a mainstream media reporter. This type of news reporting aims to cover the events or incidents which are often ignored by the mainstream media. A citizen journalist can be any random person with gathers and reports the news. Here, news reporting can be of any form like writing an article or posting videos or photos on social networking sites. With the emergence of smartphones and social networks, citizen journalism has become more popular and widespread. As a citizen journalist, I want to bring forth the events and happenings which are generally ignored or dismissed by the mainstream media. I want to shed light on forgotten facts and misinterpreted incidents. Being a multilinguist I can gather news and report it in different languages so that people can be more aware of what's happening around the world.
I can use my language skills in reporting the news more effectively and creatively. I could create a blog, report the events through articles and invite people to comment on their views on it which will enhance the communication among citizens. As a multilinguist, I have the advantage of bringing different cultures and societies closer to each other thus acting as a bridge between them. As a result, they can understand one another better and be more aware of their surroundings. I can put my language skills to use in creating content with excellent and high quality.
As citizens, we have the responsibility of creating a better society. As multilinguists, we have the opportunity, advantage, and responsibility to create a difference in society. Since I know the Japanese language, I can understand their culture better and in return can give a good view of their culture and news to the rest of the world. Similarly, I can introduce my culture and traditions to them and promote communication and awareness between them. Knowing multiple languages and having good language skills will definitely help in delivering news accurately. Also, a multilinguist has the advantage of reaching a wider audience compared to a person who can only communicate in one language. I would like to conclude by asserting that being a multilinguist one can definitely make society better by putting their language skills to use for gathering, reporting news, and bridging gaps among different societies.
