Brief Profile:

I am Asmita Kundu from Puruliya, West Bengal. I completed my Bachelors in English language and Literature from Nistarini College in Puruliya. After completing my bachelor's, I shifted to Kolkata to pursue my M.A. degree in Linguistics from the University of Calcutta. Having completed my Master's, I am currently working as a research intern at the Linguistic Research Unit at Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. While in university, I worked on a project as audio to text transcriber and translator and worked with Bengali, Hindi, and English speech data.

My fascination with languages and different cultures encouraged me to study Linguistics as my Master's subject. Apart from knowing my mother tongue Bengali, I am proficient in Hindi and English. My growing enthusiasm towards learning languages made me take up the German language as a certificate course for one year from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. I have also recently completed a brief online certificate course in Mundari from the Centre of Endangered Languages, Central University of Jharkhand.

Apart from academic qualification, I have been trained in Hindustani Classical Music for 12 years and achieved a Sangeet Prabhakar degree from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad.

Career Goals:

Knowing a language other than our native tongue introduces us to a new and unique culture, and I find that fascinating. I am very much interested in working as a linguistic anthropologist. As a linguist, I look forward to work on projects regarding language documentation and preservation of Indian languages.

Before pursuing my Ph.D., I wish to become a polyglot and sharpen my language skills working as a translator and interpreter. During leisure, I love to indulge myself in watching films and reading books. I also have plans to work as an editor in book publishing or media houses.

I want to work as a freelance translator while exploring different jobs and gaining experience of all sorts. At present, I am enthusiastically looking forward to becoming a part of Modlingua and learn from Mr. Ravi Kumar Sir about the field of translation, interpretation, editing, etc. I believe I will grasp the required skills needed to be a good translator and interpreter and know more about the industry from the first-hand experience.
