We have all seen how ants are able to effectively work in a team in order to improve their results as a group. However, what can we, translators and interpreters, learn from these clever insects and the way they interact with each other?

Ants are the best example of how networking and team working can help us boost our performance along our career. By networking as an ant would do, translators are enabled to reach influencers, new companies to work for, possible partners, get to know the newest trends or even get in touch with those willing to finance their ideas of expanding their business.

Networking can help you get to know other professionals who, as mentioned previously, can become partners in future projects. This is how closely linked networking and teamwork are.

Teamwork is key when it comes to big projects, especially when working in-house for a company. Four or five members usually compose in-house translation teams, each one taking a different role but always working together towards the same result. In the same manner, ants will have leaders but will always work towards achieving the same results and ensure, for instance, lifting a heavy crumb of bread and taking it to their colony, from which the entire colony will benefit. Moreover, as an ant depends on its colony, a translator depends on his team’s performance. If the team works effectively and is qualified enough to meet high quality standards, the reputation of the entire team will be well recognized. Nevertheless, this could work the other way around and that is where our networking choice has its impact.

Another example that we can observe from ants and is similar to a translation team is how, when a mistake is made, there is always the possibility of another one to take over and lead the way to the best result, ensuring the best outcome for the rest of the team. In a translation team, this could be done by the proof-readers or by the project manager, for instance.

Furthermore, ants are a great metaphor of how professional relationships among translators and interpreters from different countries and continents can work together in order to create a greater community with similar aims. Such aims being those which have existed since the appearance of their profession: overcoming language and cultural barriers, increasing the awareness of their field and connecting communities, for example.

Modlingua is an example of a company with high quality standards, offering number one certified translation services. Therefore, working together with Modlingua, you can not only improve your professional network but also consider them for future projects, during which you become a great team.
