We as a language professional sell our ideas, thoughts, understanding of culture, expressions and so many things with our own absorption of target audiences need. Every individual has its own style of saying, writing and understanding and that is how we actually pack ourselves in a packet which you may call a personal branding. How we communicate our eligibility to the clients is a big challenge, as everyone here is trying to show themselves as a key to the lock, so you have to make your way through them and for that if qualifications like education, training, certificate plays important role then your way of presenting yourself plays even "The Important role". Unless you will be able to reach or pull attention, you may certainly not be able to survive. As we know from the statistics that how translation industry is growing and the future prospect is also growing then in augmenting time translators will be recognized as true professionals. This will not be recognized as more of side job as many people receive it as a part time job but the effort we do to make the content so perfect can not be realized by them.
There are a number of clients in this field and which one to believe is a big issue as these factors further diminished the reputation of this industry and no one would like to be in this field for long. So as translators we all have to decide that there may be a delay in getting work but only go for the right one, as when we show easy availability to the clients then they take us for the grant, and that is how we decrease our value and visibility in market and society too, as if not totally then proper inflow of work and payments also decide majorly the criteria of full-fledged and respecting job, and if we will not be satisfied, how can we satisfy others' to believe in our work system and profession.
There are number of sites where we can make our profile for getting the right job, but in all this Description of your each previous job and education, Description about yourself is very important as that is what recruiters see at a glance and which depicts that how you have brand yourself to create attention of the recruiters, then, of course, second will be your resume, where you mention everything in detail. Try to focus on few things where you have "forte" because this actually defines your category of work and it gets easy for recruiters to get you in that particular job, as they don't have to work out where you should be put.
As we all know that there are settings in websites that whenever we update our profile they get a notification, so that way we can increase our visibility in this field and create more opportunity for us.Linked in like sites play an important role in creating opportunity and adding the professionals of same industry wherein you want to work, explores you, even more, So adding people of your industry give you more update of jobs opening and information of all happenings.
To get the respect from others, we must respect ourselves first, our profession in which we put a lot of effort to get the better result. We must learn to value our work instead of hiding it from others because of the fear that - What will they think? How am I going to answer further questions? Will they consider it worth full fledge profession? Am I going to get a respective Nod? etc. etc. ... Flush all those thoughts and start sharing as much as possible, answer publicly all question and if still, they don’t understand it’s their problem, There is no problem in your work. Try to tell them how useful we are for the National Building, for overall growth.
Most of the people in our industry don’t update their work in social media like Facebook, as they fear to answer questions from people. I would suggest that try to share it with the world, let the people know about Translation and linguistic work. Unless we will not create awareness, how can we get that significance?
Last but not the least being responsive is very necessary for our industry, mostly when we are not working as In-house translator, do not let them ask you about confirmations and acceptance of project. Be proactive and ask them before hand even if you could not understand the project or you think that things are wrong at their end. take a initiative and clear yourself, this will remove the number of conversation, which ultimately add value and save time.
So all in all, stay connected, Polished, updated, well branded and proud, that way certainly you are going to pave the way you can create a win-win situation for yourself in society and business field both.
I am very thankful to Modlingua and Mr. Ravi to generate that confidence and awareness of our values, works and ethics. It is a great place to connect and share our thoughts and that way we can always keep our energy high.
