Rindon Kundu
I, Rindon Kundu, am working as a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Comparative Literature, Jadavpur University, India, and pursuing PhD in Translation and Theatre from the same. I’ve completed MPhil on Translation Studies from Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies, University of Hyderabad, India in 2014. Prior to this, I’ve worked as a Research Assistant under Professor Emerita Heather Goodall for the University of Technology, Sydney in 2013. Recently I have been awarded IATIS Bursary by International Association of Translation and Intercultural Studies for paper presentation at Hong Kong Baptist University. I have also been invited as a participant-translator in the IATIS International Translation Workshop and as a Resource person at the Centre for Advanced Study, Department of Comparative Literature, Jadavpur University. I also take interest in practical translation and have translated and published a few short stories and non-fiction from Bengali to English or vice versa.
Since I am a student of Comparative Literature and Translation Studies, I want to navigate between languages. Recently I have started learning Russian and Norwegian languages and have an elementary knowledge of French. Amongst Indian languages, in addition to Bengali which is my native language, I have a rudimentary understanding of Hindi, Assamese and Nepali. Besides being a researcher and translator, I love playing Badminton and in my school days, I was a member of West Bengal Schools Sports team.
Having been selected as a summer intern in Modlingua, I sincerely hope that this opportunity will enable me to access what translation theorists have been looking for – an explicit framework for the phenomena commonly subsumed under the term ‘practical translation’ and I also think that this internship will improve my skill of translation as well as enrich my theoretical and practical knowledge about translation.
Career Goals
My foremost goal in life is to acquire a career in academics as well as to pursue translation professionally. I am a Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Comparative Literature, Jadavpur University, India, where I have been teaching modules related to theory and practice of translation studies as a UGC Senior Research Fellow and my research is being funded by the University Grants Commission, India. In the year 2013, I stood first in the UGC National Eligibility Test, an eligibility test for Junior Research Fellowship in the subject of Comparative Literature. Since I have completed MPhil in Translation Studies in 2014 from the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies (CALTS), University of Hyderabad, India and have two masters degree, one in Comparative Literature from Jadavpur University, India and the other in English Literature from University of Calcutta, India, I believe that I know the required tools to interpret texts as well as translate them. These academic achievements and my active involvements as research assistants in several projects ranging from Indian Theatre to Oral History in different institutions i.e., University of Sydney, Australia; University of Hyderabad, India and Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, India, are indicative of my commitment to all aspects of academia and research.
As an intern of Modlingua, I can bring in the role of practical translator and translation theorist. It is an absolute pleasure that I have been selected to work with the other interns and the resource persons at Modilingua.
