Brief Profile
I am currently pursuing my undergraduate degree in French at the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies. My areas of academic interest are translation and interpretation, especially literary translation and business interpretation. I completed my higher secondary education in Humanities from Mahbert High School, Siliguri, West Bengal. I aspire to pursue a postgraduate program in Translation and Interpretation from a British university on a fully-funded, prestigious Chevening Scholarship.
I have been involved in various social interventions and internships. I volunteered for an NGO called Pravah, through which I taught various subjects to children of an orphanage in Delhi. Apart from this, I have also completed an internship with the Model United Nations (MUN). I received a special recommendation letter for my performance during the internship.
In my leisure time, I love to watch movies, read novels, and cook the latest recipes.
Career Goals
As a citizen of such a diverse country like India, where spoken language patterns change within every two kilometres, I have always found it natural that I am so fascinated by languages. I take an active interest in how human beings express their everyday as well as the most intimate emotions with the help of languages. I am also intrigued by its cultural nuances.
Hence, I decided to pursue an undergraduate degree in French at the prestigious Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, University of Delhi. Initially, when I was trying to decide what language I should study for my undergraduate program, it was my brother who recommended taking French. Now that I am into the second year of my program, I realize that knowing French opens up a treasure trove of philosophical insights, some of the best literature and cinema. It is also an important global language that is used in the world of business and politics.
Hence, my career goals are closely connected to my current field of study. I want to continue my fascination with languages for the rest of my life by working as a translator and interpreter. In the third year of my undergraduate program, I would like to take up an optional course module on translation and interpretation. This would initiate me with the academic skills in the domain. Following this, I want to pursue a Master’s program in Translation and Interpretation from a university in the United Kingdom where I want to specialize in business translation and learn simultaneous interpretation. I would also like to undertake translation and interpretation-related internships and workshops so that I have a fair idea about what the job as an interpreter entails and what the job market is like.
My short-term career goal following my postgraduate degree is to work as an interpreter in a multinational company. Through this position, I hope to learn key professional skills and make useful networks in my professional domain. My dream is to work as an interpreter for a prestigious global organization like the UN or the European Union. I would like to leverage my networks developed through my initial jobs to slowly climb up and make gradual progress in my professional career.
